Free ESF Funded Community Computer / IT Training

Merkinch Enterprise offers FREE community computer / IT training courses to residents of Merkinch and the surrounding Inverness district catchment area. The courses are funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey Enterprise and is also supported by Merkinch Enterprise. The course on offer is aimed at providing students with training and experience in the use of the industry standard software applications used by businesses throughout the Highlands.

Applicants must be unemployed but not retired. The course is designed to help people aquire additional skills to improve their employment opportunities. No previous experience of computers is required. The course study is designed to be flexible, allowing the student to progress at the rate he/she feels comfortable with.

The 10-week course offers the student an opportunity to gain accreditation for the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Higher National Units - Information Technology Applications 1 and Information Technology Applications 2. To achieve this, trainees will require to sit summative assessments as per the content shown below.

Information Technology Applications (ITA) 1 (Higher National Unit - 1 credit)

  1. Operating systems - Use of Windows Explorer for file management, Virus checking Windows 95
  2. Introduction to Wordprocessing - Text entry, editing, formatting, business letter and report writing Word 97/Word 2000
  3. Introduction to Spreadsheets - Basic spreadsheet construction, formulae, spreadsheet types; cash flows, stock, wage calculation Excel 97/Excel 2000
  4. Introduction to Databases - Single table database construction; tables, forms, queries, reports Access 97/Access 2000

Information Technology Applications (ITA) 2 (Higher National Unit - 1 credit)

  1. Intermediate Wordprocessing - Tables, footnotes/endnotes, table contents, graphics Word 97/Word 2000
  2. Intermediate Spreadsheets - Multisheet spreadsheets, macros, graphs Excel 97 / Excel 2000
  3. Intermediate Databases - Multi table (Relational) databases Access 97/Access 2000
  4. Communications - Email, Internet Internet/Outlook Express

In Scotland, Structural Funds are the main source of EU funding providing over £1.1 billion pounds in Scotland for the period 2000-2006. The Structural Funds aim to reduce disparities between regions. They promote sustainable economic development in regions which are lagging behind or in decline and tackle long term unemployment and social inclusion.
