Pupils search out WW2 evacuees!
PRIMARY 7 at Merkinch PS are working on a project about World War II and would like to hear from anyone who was an evacuee at that time.
Many youngsters who lived in what were felt to be dangerous areas, such as Clydebank, were sent away to live with families in safer places.
They carried a small suitcase with their things and had their names on labels pinned to their coats, just like a parcel.
It must have been quite a daunting experience for them, many of whom had never been away from their families before. Often it was difficult for their mothers to visit them regularly.
If you were evacuated as a child or know someone who was, do get in touch with Mr Kemp at the school and help today’s young people understand what can happen in wartime.
- Recently Jennie Martin from Trees for Life visited Merkinch Primary and talked to pupils in P3 and P4 about the Ancient Caledonian Forest and the animals that used to live there - bears, wolves and beavers. Jennie told the pupils about how Trees for Life members were helping regenerate the forest.
- A new addition to the school garden is the bird bath, bought thanks to the generosity of a neighbour of the school who kindly donated the cost of it.
- Schools close for the Easter holidays on Friday 4th April and re-open on Wednesday 23rd April. Teachers return on the 22nd for an in-service training day. May Day holiday is 5th May and for those wanting to plan summer holidays, the school will close on 3rd July and re-open on 18th August.
- At the end of February, pupils from S at Inverness High and p7 from Merkinch were treated to a range of demonstrations to mark Science Year. Some of the experiments the youngsters wouldn’t be allowed to do at home, according to one P7 pupil!
