Ward 2 moves to Aonach Mhor

AONACH Mhor is the name which has been given to the new facility between Benula Road and Telford Road, a halfway house to support those adjusting to the wider world after a period of mental ill health. All the former wards at the old Craig Dunain have been named after Highland landscapes and the former Ward 2 was given the same name as the Lochaber ski slope.

The residents moved in to their new homes, on time, on 18th July. In charge is Clinical Area Manager Alan Gowie who has been working at the Craig for 19 years. And at any one time during the day he is assisted by around five staff; at night there are three staff on duty.

The facilities at Aonach Mhor are of hotel standard and represent a leap from the 19th century curtained cubicles at Craig Dunain right into the 21st century. Here residents have their own shower and toilet en suite and the luxury of privacy with a room door they can lock. There are four flats each of which can accommodate five people. Every flat has a communal kitchen and dining area, a traditional bathroom and a laundry room, and there is a lounge and a smoking room. At present the fluctuations of take-up mean that there are only 10 people.

Residents are free to go out on their own or in small groups, and there is a range of activities they can pursue: swimming, fishing, riding, cinema and hill-walking can all be organised.
