CURRENTLY in training for his big charity effort this month is South Kessock man Kevin Welsh. Kevin (21), who lives in Craigton Avenue, is cycling from Inverness to Aberdeen on 24th August in aid of the Highland Hospice.
Kevin has been cycling seriously for the last eight years and takes part in road racing and time trials with local clubs. He will be setting off at 8am from the Hospice in Bishop's Road and hopes to complete the 105-mile journey in around five hours.
Kevin decided to carry out this sponsored run for the Hospice as he lost his mother Morag to cancer at the end of last year. She was a highly respected member of the Merkinch community and is much missed. He is naturally keen to raise as much as possible for the Hospice, so anyone willing to sponsor him can contact him at 45 Craigton Avenue (tel. 717672) or through the Hospice.
UISDEAN MacRae, Scottish champion disabled athlete and star of the wheelchair dancing circuit, hopes to defend, for the last time, the 75m sprint title he has held for 14 out of the last 17 years. He has also gained UK titles in the 60m and 100m events in Sheffield and Portsmouth.
The Highland heats are to be held on Wednesday 21st August at Queen's Park, and Uisdean seems certain to earn a place in the Scottish finals in Meadowbank in September. But he says his racing chair is now 23 years old and can't keep going for ever, so this may be his last year in competition.
The day of the Highland heats also sees Merkinch-based Uisdean taking part in the Highland Wheelchair Dancing Club open night at Raigmore Community Centre. The Club's Highland Flyers team are taking part in an international event in Blackpool in September along with two other Scots teams.
