Community Centre hit by flash flood

MERKINCH Community Centre was affected by a flash flood following the tropical rain storm which hit Inverness in the early evening of Monday 21st July.

All over the city drains were simply not able to empty away, and at the Centre rainwater off the flat roof, which normally clears into the public waste water system through internal pipes, simply had nowhere to go as the tide was in and drains were full.

The result was that sinks in the kitchen and loos produced fountains up to two-and-a-half to 3ft high at times, and the water poured all over the floor. Fortunately there was no link to the sewage system, however the worry was that the water would reach the sprung floor of the gym and destroy it.
Thanks to the efforts of Ivor, Ian and various helpers, the water was kept at bay, and after several hours hard work the mess was cleared up without too much damage.
