SATURDAY 2nd August sees the highlight of Merkinch summer events, the Gala, take place at the Community Centre. Visitors are promised a range of entertainments, such as Highland dancers and martial arts demonstrations, and charity stalls including tombola, the key box, a coconut shy and a wheel of fortune - not forgetting “splat the rat”.
No-one is likely to starve at the Gala, for there will be a barbecue run by the Corbett Centre as well as cream teas organised by the Active Adult group and friends. The Active Adults have also been busy preparing a grand raffle and a stall with a range of goods, including some fine hand knitting. The ladies have also been preparing their fancy dresses for the parade - we understand that this will take years off them!
The fancy dress parade opens the afternoon’s events, setting off from the Grant Street car park at 10 minutes to one. There are prizes for the most original costume, and in various children’s age groups as well as adults. Judging will take place during the competition and the parade will undoubtedly be led by our local piping talent.
For more details of the fancy dress competition or any other aspects of Gala Day, please ring Rose or Ivor at the Community Centre on Inverness 239563. This year News & Views will be running a bottle stall, so do come along and support your local community newsletter!
