Sad ending for soldiers’ search for their old pal

THE search for an old pal from their army days has ended with the sad news that their one-time colleague has died.
Bill MacAulay from Telford Road, along with Joe Senior, now in Edinburgh, Invernessians Jimmy Young and Ernest Clarke (Lochalsh Road) had been looking for another Inverness man, Donald Mackenzie who was with them in the Cameron Highlanders’ 12 Platoon, stationed in Kent in 1958. Bill had come across the other two by chance, but try as they might, they could not track down Donald. Last month we published a picture of Donald when the late Dame Flora Macleod visited the regiment in the 1950s.
The mystery was solved when Donald’s sister Sophie, now Mrs Campbell, who lives in the Holm Park area, rang News & Views to tell us that sadly her brother had died in Devon on New Year’s Day, 1st January, 2000. Just before Christmas 1999, only days before his death, Donald had rung Sophie - which she thought unusual as he disliked using the telephone. Mrs Campbell said her younger brother Donald had not always kept the best of health. His ashes were brought to Inverness to be with his mother and father.
