Merkinch girls perform at Harrod’s opening

A GROUP of youngsters, mostly from Merkinch, performed Poi routines at the opening weekend of Harrod’s Christmas Fair at Falls of Shin, Sutherland last month.
Mary Fraser, Michelle Fraser, Rebecca McGivern, Rachael Berg,Cora-leigh Cooper, Louise and Lana Vanzetta demonstrated their Glow Poi skills, while Sarah Creech and Sheila Bell performed a fire swinging routine.

Thousands attended the two-day event on 8th/9th November. Success is mostly down to hard work, they say, and the girls certainly did work extra hard, performing at half-hour intervals all day and an hour and half solid before the firework display. Before they left they all got Mohammed Al Fayed’s autograph.
The glow girls also put on a show at the Children in Scotland conference and the bonfire night the same week. So they were pretty tired! They had worked out a few routines to various songs and improvised too.
For Glow Poi the girls need to wear shinty helmets and protective clothing as the poi move at the speed of cricket balls! Altogether the effect makes them look rather cool!
