Football from the Merkinch Arms

By James McPhee and George Reid

Merkinch Arms are in good shape: that’s the message from the Grant Street Boys.

They started their league campaign with a 2 - 0 win over the Nip Inn in a local derby. They followed that up with a resounding 5 - 0 victory over Kirkhill. Then it was cup duty against the Police. "For this game we had to make sure all the boys had their fines paid and stayed indoors on the Friday before the game," said George. Well it was worth it as we won 4 - 1. Then it was the Fluke the following Saturday and we won that one 6 - 3. Now we have Smithton in the semi-final whenever the weather gets better. Our last game before Christmas was a 1 - 0 defeat by Chieftan which put a bit of a dent in our league championship hopes. George said: "One or two good things have come out of the league campaign, mainly the form of Stephen MacKay and George Urquhart who have been a revolution, epecially if Duff (George Urquhart) takes a bucket of drink on a Friday."
