Sing up and be happy

SINGING, especially along with other people, can be very enjoyable - yet few of us get much chance once we leave school. Unless we sing hymns and carols in church, offer a tune at ceilidhs and New Year parties (and who can ever remember the words then) or join in at the intervals at football matches, we seldom experience the sheer joy of singing.

But there is a move afoot to set up a singing-for-pleasure group at Merkinch Community Centre. Open to people of all ages, the group is not intended to be a choir in any sense. “It’s just to give people the opportunity to share the pleasure that comes from singing along with others,” says Elsie Normington, who is known for her sing-along sessions with the Friendship Club. “There’s such a wide range of good songs, and it’s lots of fun.” Anyone who would like to give it a go can ring the Centre on 239563.
