Diabetes - a health time-bomb

DIABETES UK’s local branch is holding a Ceilidh Supper Dance in the Haughdale Hotel this year instead of their usual Scottish Night at Eden Court. The event is on 14th June, starting at 7.30pm.

The group held a day-long conference at the Caledonian Stadium on 31st May for the carers, partners, family and friends of diabetics as well as those who suffer from the condition. It is estimated that only one third of people with the condition have actually been diagnosed and that many are totally unaware that they are in the early stages. There are two types of diabetes, one of which is often brought on by being overweight - so as the population gradually becomes fatter it is an ever-increasing problem and likely to become something of a timebomb.

Stan Davies, who lives in Glebe Street and helps deliver News & Views was recently elected the local group’s vice-chairman. Chair is Mhairi Ross of Inverness - more details about the organisation, or diabetes, from her on 237258.
