92 YEARS young – that’s Jessie Shields of Carnarc Crescent who is seen here celebrating her birthday at the Friendship Club in Merkinch Community Centre. Jessie was born on 9th February in the Merkinch and has lived here all her life. Her husband Hugh was a Glasgow man and though she lost him many years ago, she says she still misses him. Jessie had six children and has 10 grandchildren plus a number of great-grandchildren. And to what does she attribute her long life? “I don’t drink or smoke and I don’t go with men! ” she says. Jessie loves coming to the 20-strong lunch club and has been every Wednesday since 1978.
