Dangers in the dark

THE spotlight is focusing on the danger caused by cyclists who ride about in the dark without showing any adequate lights – or perhaps with none at all. It is all very well for the cyclist to say, well I can see where I am going all right. The fact is that to the motorist, especially when there are oncoming lights, a cycle with no lights is virtually invisible.

And it is not only dangerous for the cyclist and the motorist who is unlucky enough to be anywhere in the vicinity of such an ‘invisible’ rider, it is illegal, and the police are paying particular attention to this problem which is only too common in the Merkinch area.

It is also very dangerous for cyclists to give their children or pals a lift on their crossbar, and parents should make absolutely sure their youngsters are aware of the rules of the road and the responsibilities that go with the freedom of the road.
