THE first Merkinch haggis of the Millennium is well and truly addressed by Hugh Chisholm (above) at the Community Centre’s Burns Supper. Giving the Immortal Memory at the event was MSP Farquhar Munro, while the Toast to the Lassies was proposed by Ramsay McGhee and answered by Minnie Vardey. The many who turned up to honour the Bard were entertained by North comedians Colin Campbell and Johnny Bogan, The Marlettes, pipers PM Tommy Cameron (who piped in the haggis carried by Dell McClurg) Blair Anderson and Ian MacLennan, Jock Fraser on the accordion and Billy Nelson, who was also MC for the evening, on the drums. Special dumplings were made by Anna Beattie of Brown Street, and the Centre committee chairman Anne McCreadie gave millennium gifts to all the many volunteers who had done so much to make the event so successful over the years.
