Award-winning film-maker focuses on local paper

LAST month saw a film crew descend on the Highland News and follow the workings of the editorial department for a week for a programme in the BBC’s Ex-S series.

The film is being made by 35-year-old Gary Grant who runs the award-winning Celtic Broadcasting company from offices in Lochalsh Road Inverness and London.

Gary has made a number of films, including one about Aleister Crowley of Boleskine, on the south of Loch Ness – and last year we reported that he had been in America interviewing Jamie Lee Curtis.

Gary’s theme for the current film – his 21st for TV – is the contrast between print and TV journalism. “I chose the Highland News for the documentary because it’s my favourite local newspaper,” he said.

The crew followed two student journalists – one, Heather Forrester, at the Highland News, and the other with a Paris-based TV company. Heather’s first assignment was to interview Caley Thistle’s star defender Richard Hastings. So the other student got to interview Tom Jones and see the Paris fashion shows…

The BBC have entitled the programme “Worlds Apart?” and it is due to be screened on Tuesday 20th March.
