Opportunity’s Knocked Derek for Six

Derek Christie

EX-MERKINCH Youth Club leader, Derek Christie, 23, has landed himself a part in a new film which is being called ‘a Highland version of Trainspotting’.

Given the meteoric success of that film’s stars, is Derek a budding Ewan MacGregor or Robert Carlyle?

"No, I went along because I knew the casting director (Phil MacKay from TV’s Pick a Number). I did the Big Hen Night for Cerebral Palsy at the Ice Rink last year. He was MC and I did the music. He told me to come along."

So not an acting sort then. Did that make you nervous at the audition?

"No, I wasn’t nervous. It was only a laugh. I didn’t expect anything to happen - it was just a carry on."

What’s the film like?

"It’s aimed at people my age. Without a doubt its something that’s a little bit more true to life. It’s drugs and drug dealing and organisations floating about."

Parents will be worried. Put them at ease.

"The film doesn’t make it look light hearted. It just proves in the end that drugs doesn’t pay and has a bit of a message. I do spend a lot of time without a lot on though - but I’ve been going to the gym a lot."

Will you be aiming at an acting career now?

"I haven’t thought about it. I’m just so shocked that I’ve got a part. I went in with no expectations and I’ve come out with a speaking part. I would have been happy being an extra."

"White Trash Wheels" shoots in the summer.
