Two themes out front in naming of new housing

FEW topics in recent years have attracted such a response as the naming of the new housing development in Telford Road. We were showered with notes, phone calls, letters; we were stopped in the street. And two themes emerged above all – the historic militia connection and in memory of the late Mabel Skinner, who lived in Telford Road and was herself a battler for the people of Merkinch.

Old (or Telford) Garrison Court, Old Garrison Place, Telford Garrison Precinct, and Telford Barracks Place all found favour with Mrs Morag Grant of Lochalsh Road, whilst The Barracks Square, Old Barracks Court and Barracks Gate Court came from Mrs Helen Falconer in Dunabban Road.

Mr J Richardson from Abban Place asked, "What's wrong with Old Militia Gate or Place?" Old Militia Gate was also the choice of one Telford Road resident who rang, and another, Mrs Muriel Allan whose paternal grandfather was based in the Inverness Militia Barracks in the first World War, suggested that the military link could be preserved by calling it Seaforth Court. "However," says Mrs Allan, "our first choice would be for the development to be named in memory of Mabel Skinner who served and loved this area so well for so long."

This tribute to the one-time councillor also found favour with various others – one anonymous caller suggested Skinner Court. And Mr Donnie Kerr of Upper Kessock Street suggested Skinner Square. The regimental crest that once graced the gate has found a new and appropriate home at Cameron Barracks. However, Mr Kerr suggests a simple brass plaque giving brief details of the Barracks' history could be mounted on the wall.
