MERKINCH ENTERPRISE GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

It is now over three years since Merkinch Enterprise was awarded National Lottery Charities Board Project money, and therefore assistance to the organisation is now about to end, however, in that short period of time the community enterprise organisation has grown and developed considerably.

At the end of the period, the Community Enterprise now employs twelve people, and is an umbrella organisation for projects as diverse as - a full day child care centre and out-of-school care club, a technology centre offering support to local businesses, Internet access, writing and producing C.V’s and letters amongst other things, a computer training centre - exclusively for the people of Merkinch, a job and information centre, a community newsletter, produced and delivered free of charge to over 2400 homes and businesses in the area.

In October last year, with assistance from Inverness and Nairn Enterprise, the organisation refurbished the old Cameron butchers shop on Grant Street and opened the premises as a commercial Information Technology Training Centre. The idea behind this new venture was not only to provide quality I.T. training to organisations and individuals throughout Highland but also as a way of financially supporting the non profit-making side of the organisation.

During a recent informal visit from the Scottish National Lotteries Board, the Board’s representative was notably impressed at the success of the organisation. As Project Manager, Colin Downie stated at a recent staff meeting "We impressed the Board representative, so much so, by the evident achievements made within the organisation, that, unfortunately we cannot apply for any more grants for our exisiting projects! A victim, it would seem, of our own success!".
