CARNARC Point saw lots of activity on the morning of Saturday 30 September, writes A. McC.
A few days earlier out of the blue we had a phone call saying a group of 50 teenagers were looking for an environmental project to get involved in on the Saturday for one and a half hours.
And as some weeks before, Diana and Peter, who moved north a year ago, had given us hundreds of bulbs – a lot of planting – and we also needed to paint the benches which have just been erected, we were delighted at the offer of help.
Just before eleven on the day, a stream of cars and minibuses arrived and out jumped the eager helpers from the Church Of Latter Day Saints who were from all over the north attending a weekend convention in Inverness.
As usual with a group of youngsters, some were more eager to get their hands dirty than others. Some of the boys went down to borrow forks, spades and trowels from the tool club whilst some of the girls donned the royal blue boiler suits we provided to paint the benches.
One girl who did a good job with the painting was really disappointed she couldn't keep the suit!
The ground was very hard so a lot of the digging was left to the leaders while other groups were collecting rubbish. But on the whole, for the size of Carnarc Point, there was very little to collect – this is one area where we seem to be making progress.
By noon the area was litter free, the benches painted, bulbs planted and more importantly a large group of children and their leaders were realising that South Kessock is not such a bad place to be.
We always like to involve local children in our activities, and as the benches needed another coat of paint, on Sunday Dell went back to Carnarc Point with some local boys who applied the second coat.
They were: Rae Kelbie (11), Kyle McCourt (10), Sean Ross (8), Liam Ross (5), and Sam Harkness (11). Thanks for all your help boys.
The boys were given juice and crisps as a thank you and at the same time they learned about “volunteering”. Our thanks also go to the youths and leaders of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
