The do’s and dont’s of dogs
BADLY behaved, untrained dogs are a pest to neighbours and a danger to themselves as well as others. Here are half a dozen do’s and as many dont’s from Highland Council’s Guide to Responsible Dog Ownership…
DO
- Make your dog identifiable by collar and tag or microchip.
- Keep your dog on a lead in public places.
- Train your dog to obey simple commands, such as Stay! Sit! etc.
- Ensure your dog has annual vaccinations and health checks from your vet.
- Ensure your dog is wormed at least every three months - pregnant bitches and puppies every month.
- Have your pet neutered to prevent unwanted puppies.
DON’T
- Allow your dog to foul buildings, pavements, gardens or open spaces where children play.
- Allow your dog to roam unattended.
- Allow your dog to be noisy and disturb your neighbours.
- Wait for an emergency before registering with a vet.
- Wait for your dog to come home if lost - inform the police or dog warden if it is missing.
- Buy a dog until you are sure of the financial and social responsibilities involved.
