DR WATSON, I PRESUME

Stewarts graduation photo Stuart Watson, who has been the community Information Technology training officer within Merkinch Enterprise for the last three years, says good bye to his workmates and trainees this month when he heads South to take up a new job.

Stuart, who is a graduate from Glasgow University and completed his Masters Degree at Aberdeen University before taking up his training post within Merkinch Enterprise has been offered what he says is "an opportunity of a lifetime", to work within the Medical Physics and Electronics Departments of the University of Glamorgan. Stuart whose new post, called a Research Fellowship, involves working with a team of other researchers and PHD students in a three year project aimed at designing and establishing a new style of brain scanner. On leaving his home of 7 years Stuart says: "I’m leaving Merkinch, which has been my home for the last 7 years, with a little bit of trepidation. I’ve really enjoyed living and working in this area, however, it is just too good a chance to miss."

Since his time at Merkinch Enterprise Stuart, through financial assistance from the European Social Fund, has helped the local community acquire computer skills which has enabled them to take those new skills further, many going on to Higher Education or entering the workplace.

Over the last three years Stuart has seen over one hundred people from Merkinch going through the computer training course, with over 80% of people gaining a recognised qualification and over two thirds going onto employment or further education and as he says: "I think learning and developing is really important, I have a real enthusiasm for that. I get a kick out of seeing people learning new skills. What I’ve enjoyed most is seeing people from Merkinch coming onto the course and picking up new skills in the very important field of Information Technology, and if I’ve helped pass on any of the skills in I.T. that I’ve gained over the years, and people are then able to use them, then, for me, that’s what it’s all about, that is what gives me satisfaction at the end of the day."
