Increased security being planned for Harbour, Quayside & Tannery court flats

As many of you may have read recently in the Inverness Courier, Highland Council are consulting with residents of the Harbour, Quayside and Tannery Court flats to discuss the possibility of increased security arrangements. Following on from the initial meeting which was very poorly attended, the Highland Council attempted to discuss options with tenants by holding a further 3 consultation meetings in the individual blocks of flats. These meetings were attended by a good proportion of tenants, who, in the majority were happy with the plans for the area.

These plans include fencing or walling around the perimeter of the flats, thus denying access to anyone but residents, who will be supplied with a pass or key for the main gate. Visitors to the flats will be only be given entry to the area after security have checked with the householder they are to visit with. A security gatehouse will be erected at the Thornbush Road entrance to the flats, and as at the moment CCTV cameras will be in operation throughout the grounds. It is expected that these measures will go a long way toward keeping out drunks, and persons who abuse the area in general. The existing playpark will be cleaned up, and there may be funds for each block of flats to have their own individual playpark, again, reassuring news for parents of small children who live in the flats.

Persons from South Kessock who currently use the alleyway connecting Rosehaugh Road and the flats, as a means of access to Thornbush Road, or the local shop, need not worry. The alleyway will not be blocked off, but will be slightly re-directed to lead onto Thornbush Road on the south side of the shop, rather than the north side which is most used at present.

further consultation meeting between the Highland Council and tenants of the flats will be held in the Merkinch Community Centre on Wednesday 7th October at 7pm, when it is planned to show a video of a similar project in Glasgow - Iona Court. Residents will also be given advice and support on setting up a residents’ association.
