The La Scala cinema has been in existence since 1913, when it was known as Kelso’s La Scala. The grand opening was on Thursday 27th November, and tickets were on sale from Messrs Neil and Maclennans music saloon on Academy Street, prices being 12/6d (62˝p) for private boxes, 3/- (15p) for single seats, 2/- (10p) for the reserve balcony and 1/6d (7˝p) for all other areas.
The films you could see then were silent, and black and white. Colour films and talkies were still some time off. Music to complement the action taking place on the film would be supplied by a pianist.
Improvements in technology led to sound being available with films. La Scala started showing talkies in 1930, greatly enhancing the experience of a visit to the cinema.
In 1979 La Scala moved to temporary premises in the Little Theatre in Farraline Park to allow extensive refurbishment, improving the facilites and providing a two screen cinema.
Saturday 3rd February 1996 saw La Scala host the world premiere of Loch Ness. The event was attended by many stars, including Ted Danson, Joely Richardson, Ian Holm, Bob Geldof, Anneka Rice, Nicky Clarke, David Badiel, Frank Skinner and many others.
Presently La Scala can offer the latest releases, late night showings and Saturday morning matinees. Concession rates are always available, there are discounts for block bookings, and discounts for community groups can be arranged.
