AS MANY as 20 drivers a week may be driving the wrong way on one-way Lochalsh Road, according to Jim Smith of Merkinch Traders. And it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. He told Merkinch Community Council last month that from his shop, Clach Repairs, where he works facing the road he observed at least 14 vehicles going the wrong way in five days in the course of a survey for the traffic wardens. Others in the area have expressed some surprise at such a high count, but admit they have occasionally been shocked to find drivers (usually lost) going the wrong way on Telford Road too. Various ways were suggested of stressing the fact it is a one-way system. The Traders have agreed to go along with the restoration of the double yellow lines at the north end of Lochalsh Road.
