Once upon a time, before the News and Views became the Merkinch mouthpiece, there was a community Newsletter known as the Merkinch Letter. This newsletter, which was very professionally produced and compiled by local people in the area (Joe and Loius, Jane Morrison & Dell McLurg), is well worth a read to see a realistic view of Merkinch in the 1980’s. We are indebted to Dell McLurg for permission to extract from their newsletter.
INFANT SCHOOL CLOSURE
Coronation Park Infant School is to be closed. The decision was made by the Regional Education Committee. The children will be transferred to the modernised Merkinch School. Local Councillor Dan Corbett, feels that the school is being closed simply because of the administrative inconvenience and not because of declining rolls.
(Merkinch Letter 1984)
Traditionally Inverness High School has always been the Secondary School attended by children from the Merkinch area. For this reason the News and Views intends to print old school photographs (kindly provided by the Inverness High School).
